After a dazzling performance at EuroBasket where he was arguably the best player of the tournament, Luka Dončić was, unsurprisingly, named to the FIBA EuroBasket All-Star Five on Sunday.
Luka was joined by Dennis Schröder and Franz Wagner of victorious Germany, Alperen Şengün of second-place Türkiye and Giannis Antetokounmpo of third-place Greece.
Luka ended EuroBasket as the leading scorer at 34.7 points per game. No other player averaged more than 30 points per game with Giannis second at 27.3 points per contest.
He finished second in overall assists and assists per game, trailing only Schröder. He also led EuroBasket in steals with 19 across seven games. In short, Luka was dominant at EuroBasket.
He did not, however, win MVP of the tournament. That honor went to Schröder, who finished with 16 points and 12 assists in Germany’s 88-83 win over Türkiye in the final. Even more incredibly, Isaac Bonga — yes, that Isaac Bonga — earned TCL Player of the Game honors, effectively Finals MVP, in the championship game after scoring 20 points on 8-11 shooting overall and 4-4 shooting from range.
Sengun led all scorers in the championship game with 28 points on 11-22 shooting. Cedi Osman played all 40 minutes and scored 23 points.
Officially, Slovenia finished seventh at EuroBasket. Greece beat Finland in the third-place game — behind Giannis’ 30 points, 17 rebounds and six assists — while Lithuania and Poland also finished ahead of Slovenia.
Training camp for the Lakers will start at the end of September, meaning Luka will have somewhere between two and three weeks off before returning to the court. Given that he is well ahead of everyone else, he’ll be joining in purple and gold, it wouldn’t be a surprise if he takes things a bit slowly in the preseason.
