Chelsea have begun preseason preparations at Cobham this week, with manager Xabi Alonso getting to work and joined by all those players who were not involved in the World Cup (or those who are still there of course).
One surprise absentee however has been Alejandro Garnacho, who joined the Blues just last summer for a decent chunk of change, hoping to resurrect his career after it had stalled at Manchester United. Alas, he failed to get the thing into gear and going again. We tried to jump start it multiple
times, to no avail. Time to call a tow truck?
Indeed, as per The Athletic, and others, Garnacho has been “allowed to stay away” to sort out his future, with the 22-year-old “keen to leave” as well. Chelsea have set an asking price in the region of €50m, and are “optimistic of completing a deal in the next fortnight” before we leave on July 25 for the preseason tour Down Under.
As to who might want to take Garnacho, that’s a bit of a mystery. Chelsea are said to have “received interest from clubs in the Premier League, Europe and the Saudi Pro League”, but only AS Roma have been named in transfer rumors, and in classic Serie A style, they’re only interest in a loan. Garnacho at €50m would be a record transfer for them, and that seems unlikely, to say the least. This is the trouble with buying so many lottery tickets. Many will not be winners, and you will be left holding the bag.
