Penta was scheduled to team with Fenix for the return of the Lucha Bros to AAA at the Guerra de Titanes event on December 20. Unfortunately, Penta suffered an injury. WWE is replacing Penta with the star
power of Rey Mysterio. Rey’s inclusion makes the match even juicier against Dominik Mysterio and El Grande Americano.
Penta broke the news. He’s done all he can to recuperate quickly from a shoulder injury, but he won’t be cleared for Guerra de Titanes. In Penta’s place will be the living legend Rey Mysterio. It will be the first time that Rey and Fenix are a tag team. Penta also had a message for Dominik. He won’t stop until he takes the WWE Intercontinental Championship from Dom.
It’s interesting to note that Penta mentioned the WWE Intercontinental Championship rather than the AAA Mega Championship. Penta previously cut a promo on AAA television about going for the top prize. Eyeing WWE gold could be a hint at Penta’s immediate direction upon return from injury.
Mysterio and Fenix have teamed in trios action a handful of times over the years, but they have never been a two-man tag team. The most recent trios contest was with Dragon Lee in victory over Chad Gable and the Creed Brothers on WWE Smackdown on April 18, 2025. An interesting footnote in history is Mysterio, Fenix, and Bandido losing to the Young Bucks and Kota Ibushi in the main event of All In on September 1, 2018. This All In event was the precursor to the evolution of AEW.
The storyline behind Lucha Bros versus Dominik Mysterio and El Grande Americano was booked when the newly dubbed Gringos Locos 2.0 declared themselves as the greatest tag team in the world. Penta and Fenix popped in to issue the tag team challenge. Now, we’ll get the father and son story mixed in as well with Rey replacing Penta.
