The World Cup enters the weekend with a slate of four matches with the fates of groups E and F hanging in the balance. Things get started with a northern European showdown as the Netherlands represent the low countries and take on their Scandinavian rivals Sweden. The Oranje will want to get the party started following a draw with Japan while Sweden is sitting atop the group thanks to its victory over Tunisia.
The winners from the opening games of Group E will face off with Germany and Ivory Coast
venturing north to Toronto as the tripartite World Cup spans the North American landmass today. Germany will be feeling buoyed after being held off for most of the first half against Curacao to come away with a 7-1 win while Ivory Coast also took three points in the opener against Ecuador. That sets up a matchup between the losers in the group where they will know exactly what they need to do in the next two games to guarantee a spot out of the group. Ecuador will come in as favorites but Curacao showed it has a lot of fight against Germany and can’t be overlooked.
For the night cap, Soccer After Dark goes to Monterrey as Cerro de la Silla will welcome Tunisia and Japan into its warm embrace. Tunisia is not exactly facing a must win game, but a second loss will all but surely send them home. Both teams will have the result of the Sweden vs. Netherlands game on their minds as they set their designs on getting out of the group.
