After witnessing one of the worst defensive performances in team history in 2025, the Dallas Cowboys decided to pretty much clean slate at the season’s end. They hired Christian Parker as defensive coordinator to replace Matt Eberflus, and hired a new defensive staff. Then through trades, free agency, and the draft they attempted to upgrade their roster.
Only time will tell if the moves they made so far pay off in 2026, but already the early returns through organized team activities are being met
with optimism. This is a group expected to be much improved from a season ago, however, how much so remains to be seen. So far though, we should all be encouraged the improvements they’re already making.
Talent
After suffering through a talent deprived, underperforming defense a season ago, the Cowboys top priority was upgrading this side of the ball. If early returns are any indication, things look promising. The trades for Rashan Gary and Dee Winters, and the additions of Jalen Thompson, Cobie Durant, and P. J. Locke should be significant. The drafting of Caleb Downs, Malachi Lawrence, and Jaishawn Barham, is expected to play a big role, too. All of these additions should help aid Christian Parker improving Dallas’ defensive performance.
Leadership
Lack of leadership plagued the Cowboys defensive season ago. DeMarcus Lawrence left via free agency to join the Seattle Seahawks and Dallas lost their best, most vocal leader on that side of the ball. Sadly, nobody really stepped up in that role last year, but that doesn’t seem to be the case any longer. Quinnen Williams, Kenny Clark, and Rashan Gary have all been identified as players stepping into more of a leadership role. Even first-round pick Caleb Downs has been praised by both the coaching staff and teammates for his work ethic and leadership quality.
Confidence
From the hiring of Christian Parker and the coaching staff he put together, to the players they added on the defensive side of the ball to upgrade the roster, the confidence level of this new-look 3-4 Cowboys defense is definitely trending upwards. They still have plenty of time to continue to get better, but already in OTAs they’re playing with much more confidence, communication, and discipline. So much so, trash talking/taunting with the offensive side of the ball is heard nonstop, even Christian Parker gets involved.
