Coors Field can be good for what ails ya, eh?
The Dodgers looked like the offensive powerhouse they should look like Tuesday night at Coors Field in Denver. They dropped 11 runs on the Rockies, in line with what they should be doing at high altitudes.
We’ve (I’ve) spent so much time lamenting the bad about this team I thought maybe its time to look at all the good that’s happening too.
(Yes a lot of this is with the caveat of how good they looked last night.)
Alex Call maybe has arrived? The outfielder
went 4-5 with a home run on Tuesday ,a triple shy of the cycle, and got on base and scored in Monday’s game. I’m choosing to believe he’s fully adjusted to his new team, and we will see more good things from him going forward.
Will Smith, who has lead the National League in batting average the entire season, has been in a slump recently. Tuesday night he went 3-4 with a walk, had two RBI and a run. Hopefully this will get him back on track offensively too. He will only catch tonight’s game at Coors and will DH for Shohei Ohtani in Thursday’s game.
Beyond Coors, but including it, the starting pitching has been fantastic. Excluding Ohtani starts, where he was limited in innings before the game started, the Dodgers starting pitching have gone five innings or more in 14 of 15 starts. Yoshinobu Yamamoto went seven innings of three run ball on Monday, which is phenomenal at Coors, and even though Emmet Sheehan gave up four runs Tuesday night, he still went six full innings. The team still has two more games at Coors and conserving the bullpen as much as possible before heading into San Diego this weekend is paramount.
Help is on the horizon! As we near the end of August, we also near the return of Tommy Edman, Max Muncy, Hyesong Kim, and Enrique Hernandez, who was previously thought maybe wouldn’t make it back this season. In the next week, Hernandez, Kim, and relief pitchers Tanner Scott and Kirby Yates will all be going out on rehab assignments. Edman is slated to be back mid-September, and will all light our candles and cross out fingers and toes that Muncy continues to feel better and will be back sooner than later.
Let us bask in the glow of good vibes while we can, and before we get stressed about the upcoming series in San Diego.
Shohei Ohtani will start today for the Dodgers and perhaps will be allowed to go five innings. The Rockies will counter with Tanner Gordon, a right hander with a 7.98 ERA. He’s only struck out 24 in 38.1 innings across eight games so far this season.
