Bayern Munich went on the road and subdued a feisty Atlético Madrid, walking away with a decisive 2-0 win at the Metropolitano. Match report and highlights below.
In Vincent Kompany’s continue absence, assistant Aaron Danks led the Bavarians from the sidelines. The Bayern XI featured the return of both Manuel Neuer and Michael Olise, Alphonso Davies at left wing, and Lennart Karl starting at the No. 10.
The first half started as might have been expected: Diego Simeone’s men remaining compact at the
back while Bayern stayed on the ball and probed for chances. Right-back Konrad Laimer was the early danger man for Bayern, but true chances were hard to come by and were quickly squandered: notably, after a brilliant charge upfield from center-back Dayot Upamecano, Harry Kane laid the ball on a platter for Karl to shoot, only to see the youngster’s shot fly into the stands. Laimer himself, on a later occasion having found space down his flank, could commit to neither shot nor cross and dragged his try far wide of threatening Atlético keeper Jan Oblak.
In a week in which tensions have started to flare up between Karl’s camp and Bayern over critical public comments from honorary president Uli Hoeneß, it was not the brightest of starts for the 18-year-old. But Karl would make amends, taking matters into his own hands following a careless moment at the back from Atlético’s defense and scoring the game’s opening goal in the 54th minute.
While the goal shook the home side from its stupor, Bayern remained in solid control of proceedings. After surviving a couple of scares, Bayern put the game to bed in the 74th minute with a powerful finish from Konrad Laimer at close range, assisted by Harry Kane.
The win takes Bayern to eight points out of four matchdays in the UCL League Phase. Bayern’s next match comes on the road again at Lille OSC on November 25th.
