The Rockies announced today that they have activated Brenton Doyle from the injured list and, to make room on the active roster, they optioned Braxton Fulford to Triple-A.
Doyle has been on the IL since being removed from a game on May 19th against the Texas Rangers after injuring himself on a diving play in the outfield. Doyle originally
started a rehab assignment for this left oblique injury in late June but that was shut down before he was activated due to a groin injury.
Over the course of two separate rehab stints with the Triple-A Isotopes, Doyle appeared in 11 games and batted .395/.447/.651 — a welcome sign given his slow start to the major league season. Before going on the IL in May, Doyle had struggled at the plate in 43 big league games to the tune of a .207/.279/.270 triple slash line.
Doyle returns to an outfield picture that has become quite crowded. The looming trade deadline on August 3rd will likely provide clarity as to whether Doyle will slide back into an everyday role for the Rockies.
To make room on the active roster the Rockies optioned backup catcher Braxton Fulford. This should come as little surprise considering that the Rockies have been carrying three catchers between Fulford, Hunter Goodman, and Brett Sullivan.
In 40 games for the Rockies so far this season, Fulford is batting .177/.254/.290. He will return to Albuquerque and look to work on offensive adjustments in hopes of earning another call up later this year — perhaps as soon as next week should a Goodman blockbuster actually come to fruition.
