Spain international Victor Muñoz will be Liverpool’s first signing of the 2026 transfer window after the Reds agreed to pay Osasuna a fee equaling the 22-year-old’s €40M release clause, with a team travelling to meet Muñoz at Spain’s World Cup camp and the player having already completed his medical.
News of the rapidly developing transfer story broke on Wednesday evening, with nobody seemingly aware of Liverpool’s interest until the player was already all but secured—a point driven home by news today
that the player has already passed his medical. A six-year contract has been widely reported as fully agreed.
One detail not present in initial reports of the transfer was that while Liverpool were meeting his release clause, they aren’t actually triggering it—something that in Spanish football involves the player being given the funds to pay the entire fee up front. Instead, Osasuna have agreed to be paid by Liverpool in two instalments.
It has further been suggested that while Muñoz is a player Liverpool have rated and had on their radar for some time, he rose to the top of their target list following the arrival of Andoni Iraola as the new head coach, with the Basque manager said to have been the driving force behind the push to beat Newcastle to his signing.
His arrival also won’t be the final attacking signing the Reds make, with another speedy winger remaining a top priority and Liverpool maintaining their interest in RB Leipzig’s Ivorian rising star Yan Diomande, with Said El Mala of Köln, Matias Fernandez-Pardo of Lille, and Yankuba Minteh of Brighton alternatives.
