Georgia Tech Volleyball continued their winning ways with a cruising 3-0 sweep of Boston College (25-22, 25-17, 25-14). The Jackets move to 13-5 (5-2 ACC) on the season, getting two critical wins as they enter a ferocious pair of teams next weekend in Pitt and SMU.
Alida Bennour led Tech with 17 kills on 32 swings, good for a .344 hit percentage. Laura Bieleski was also very efficient from the outside with 12 kills on 21 swings for a .429 hit percentage.
It by far wasn’t Tech’s cleanest game with some
trouble at points with blocking, but overall the talent mismatch was more than enough that once Tech found a big groove in the second set, BC didn’t hold a candle.
If you’re coming to homecoming, PLEASE make it out to one or both of the games in McCamish Pavilion!
Set 1
Boston College had the early lead up 2-0 before the sides largely traded points up to a 7-7 tie. The Eagles went on a three point run from there to go up 10-7 before Tech tied it at 11-11 on a Magda Kobaidze ace in the midst of a six point run to put Tech up 15-11.
BC countered right back with a four point run to tie it at 15-15. Tech regained a slight lead on back-to-back Laura Bieleski kills to force BC’s second timeout down 18-16. Tech’s run lasted four points out of the timeout with an ace from Alida Bennour and block by Bianca Garibaldi to go up 20-16.
Head coach Michelle Collier inserted a couple substitutions with Vitoria Belfort and Sasha Godey, and during those points largely looked disorganized, prompting Collier to call a timeout up 23-21. Following the timeout, Alida Bennour and Heloise Soares reentered the game with Bennour hitting the last two kills to take the set 25-22.
Set 2 (1-0 GT)
BC again came out to a 2-0 lead that became 3-1 on three failed blocks by Tech. That was quickly healed over by a five point run on Alida Bennour’s serve to force the Eagles’ first timeout down 6-3. Tech gradually increased the lead to four on a kill by Laura Bieleski, a Magda Kobaidza block, and ace by Heloise Soares to make it 11-7. Two points later, Tech started a four point run aided by an out of system Boston College that gave Tech some free balls to put away into the media timeout up 15-8. The run lasted one more point before Bennour and Garibaldi landed kills, then Soares had a helluva block on the right side to force BC’s last timeout down 19-11.
BC crawled back a little with their own three point run with a change of pace on offense, then landing an ace to make it 23-16 and prompt Tech’s first timeout of the set. Tech took the set on a net violation 25-17.
Set 3 (2-0 GT)
Boston College again kept it close in the early running of the set with ties from 1-1 to 6-6 before Tech got their first run on a successful challenge by Michelle Collier and Vitoria Belfort’s first career ace to go up 9-6. A kill by Alida Bennour and ace from Magda Kobaidze extended the lead to 12-8 and prompted BC’s first timeout. Tech’s run lasted seven points up to a 17-8 lead, effectively putting away the set and sweep for the Jackets.
