The Buckeyes might not have been playing in Monday’s CFP National Championship game, but there was still plenty to be excited about this weekend as Buckeye fans. The women’s basketball team won a nail-biter
against No. 9 TCU. The Ohio State dance team is bringing new hardware back to Columbus. The No. 2 women’s ice hockey team swept the series against No. 13/14 Minnesota State, and No. 6 men’s tennis swept Xavier and Toledo in their season opener.
Here is a look back at the moments that left me hooting, hollering, and picking my jaw up off the ground this week:
Chance Gray comes up big against No. 9 TCU
Chance Gray had a huge game against No. 9 TCU in the Coretta Scott King Classic on Monday, putting up 22 points and landing 6-of-8 three pointers. Never did it matter more than when the senior guard landed a three-point shot with just 16 seconds left on the clock, giving the No. 12 Buckeyes a four-point lead, 70-66, in the final seconds.
They would need it—with just 0.3 seconds left in the game, TCU’s Veronica Sheffey hit a three of her own, bringing the Horned Frogs within one before a final Buckeye free throw from Jaloni Cambridge locked in the 71-69 win.
The Buckeyes will host Indiana on Thursday at 8 p.m. ET before heading to No. 10 Iowa for a ranked matchup, Sunday, Jan. 25 at 2 p.m. ET.
Relive some of the highlights from Sunday here to prepare:
Ohio State dance team wins national title in jazz
The Buckeyes’ powerhouse dance team continued to prove why it is one of the best in the nation over the weekend when the team took home its third-consecutive national title in D1A jazz at UDA College Nationals.
Thanks to an impressive turn sequence, several stunning lifts, and jaw-dropping choreography from Shannon Mather, the Buckeyes earned a score of 96.7833 for the top spot.
They also finished third in D1A pom, behind the University of Minnesota and Texas Tech.
You can revisit their performance here, but be warned: I have watched this on loop an embarrassing number of times, and you probably will too.
Joy Dunne scores two goals in one minute in women’s ice hockey
With the score tied at 3-3 midway through the second period in Friday’s matchup between No. 2 Ohio State and No. 13/14 Minnesota State in women’s ice hockey, Buckeye Joy Dunne hit a pair of goals to give the Buckeyes a two-goal lead.
The Buckeyes would go on to win the game, 7-4, before a 4-1 win on Saturday to sweep the regular season series. Dunne followed Friday’s four-goal outing with another goal and an assist in game two, earning her Western Collegiate Hockey Association Player of the Week honors.
Dunne will represent Team USA next month at the 2026 Winter Olympics in Milan, Italy, one of 12 Buckeyes on the women’s ice hockey roster to represent their home countries.
