It’s been an explosive first training camp for Pittsburgh Steelers rookie quarterback Drew Allar.
The Penn State product has routinely made throws that raise the eyebrows of media and coaches alike over the course of the last two weeks, and he unleashed a pair of deep throws during Saturday’s annual night practice at Latrobe Memorial.
Allar spoke to the media after practice and was asked about fine-tuning the touch on his deep ball, to which he credited help from Aaron Rodgers.
“It felt really good
[to let loose on deep balls],” Allar said via Brendan Howe. “It’s been something I’m working on in terms of the trajectory to the throw. I kind of picked Aaron’s brain on it like a week ago. So to be able to finally get the chance to do it in a live setting… against live DBs in tight coverage felt really good.”
This past Thursday, I asked head coach Mike McCarthy about Allar’s progression from rookie minicamp up until now.
“He’s doing what you want from a young player,” McCarthy said. “These are tough practices because you’re not just repeating concepts… there hasn’t been a day where he hasn’t made a throw that makes you say, ‘Okay, that’s a young man taking a step.‘”
Offensive coordinator Brian Angelichio echoed those sentiments.
“Been impressed,” Angelichio told the media. “His poise, his ability to retain information. When you correct him on something, his ability to immediately go back in there and get it right – that’s important. He’s like a sponge in that QB room.”
Allar and the Steelers will take the field for the first time in live-game action this Thursday when Pittsburgh hosts the Green Bay Packers.
