For what is surely not the last time in the new era of college football, Maryland football is set to see a familiar face emerge from the tunnel at SECU Stadium once again in 2026.
Defensive tackle Lavon Johnson, who played for Maryland for the first two seasons of his career,
transferred to the University of Texas before the 2025 season. But after playing in just seven games and making just five tackles during his single season in Austin, Johnson has returned to Maryland.
While he was relegated to a bit-part role at Texas, Johnson did show flashes in his second season at Maryland, finishing with 14 tackles and 0.5 tackles for loss in eight games. He missed the other four due to injury.
Johnson has one year of eligibility remaining and is well-needed reinforcement in the middle of Maryland’s defensive line, which has lost Cam Rice and Dillan Fontus.
