Let’s get the pun out of the way early: there’s a golden opportunity at hand for a certain second-year wide receiver in Green Bay.
After a disappointing rookie campaign, Matthew Golden has it all in front of him in year two. Romeo Doubs has departed for New England. Dontayvion Wicks is gone, headed for Philadelphia via a trade. The Packers have cleared the runway for their 2025 first round pick to take off. Now all he has to do is become the player everyone believes he can be.
That’s not nothing, of
course, but there’s plenty of reason to believe Golden can do it. The volume stats were lacking last year, but there were lots of advanced metrics that liked what Golden accomplished, even in small doses. And his physical ability has never been in doubt. He may not have elite size, but he has world-class speed, and he has plenty of company in that regard in the Packers’ receiver room. They might have the fastest receiving corps in the league at the moment.
None of this actually means anything until Golden is regularly producing on the field, but reports out of OTAs are that he’s off to a great start this season. Yes, it’s not real football, but given the choice, what’s your preference: reports that Golden is having a great time at OTAs, or word that he’s struggling, even in practices that don’t really resemble football?
The opportunity remains golden, either way, and Golden has all the tools to take advantage.
