Around the same time that Juventus’ interest in Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson Becker became a pretty well-established and well-reported fact, a potential speed bump came about: a contract clause in his soon-to-be expiring deal added another year onto things. That meant, instead of him being a free agent this coming summer, Alisson’s deal now ran through 2027, and it gave Liverpool a little more leverage when it came to keeping him at Anfield.
That is proving to be right on the money.
As much as Juventus
want to sign Alisson, it appears to be a situation that is becoming more and more difficult to actually achieve. That is because Liverpool, as outlined by Fabrizio Romano on Friday, have “formally told” Alisson that they don’t intend to sell him this summer due to the simple fact that the club has seen too many big names and locker room leaders already leave following the 2025-26 season coming to a close. That is with Mo Salah headed somewhere still TBD this summer, with brief Juve target Andy Robertson agreeing to a deal with Tottenham Hotspur earlier this week and who knows what else happening for a club that had arguably one of the worst title defenses we’ve seen from a Premier League side in recent memory.
Unfortunately, that means a goalkeeper that Luciano Spalletti desperately wants to bring to Turin after a season full of mistakes from Michele Di Gregorio and Mattia Perin might not be as available as Juventus’ brass thought he might be a few weeks ago.
Or, as some probably think (and are right to), this is all a potential negotiating tactic on Liverpool’s behalf to try and make sure that Juventus go above and beyond to give Spalletti the clear-cut No. 1 choice he wants in goal.
Either way, a deal that Juventus probably wanted to try and close in relatively quick fashion is now looking to be at risk of becoming something rather opposite of that. Or, if Liverpool get what Romano is telling us they want, Alisson stays at Anfield this summer and Juventus are forced to go after another goalkeeper.
Maybe that’s in the form of another Liverpool goalkeeper — there are rumors that Alisson’s backup, Giorgi Mamardashvili, has been offered to Juve in recent days — or somebody that is more of a short-term solution as they move away from Di Gregorio and/or Perin as the main two goalkeepers.
Alisson has reportedly been keen on and given his approval to a potential move to Juventus and has agreed to personal terms with the Bianconeri. Spalletti wants to work again with a player he coached at Roma a decade ago. These two sides of the equation want something to happen. The problem is, though, Alisson’s current club don’t want any of it. They want to keep the 33-year-old Brazilian right where he is for another season before he sees out the end of his current deal and then probably moves on to his next club.
So maybe this has stand-off written all over it. It’s certainly looking that way as we head into the final days of May.
