Since the American Conference scrapped divisions in 2020, there have been 12 teams that qualified for the conference championship game. Eleven of those teams entered with one loss in conference play.
That recent historical trend set up Memphis and Army as a likely elimination game in the American title race, as both the Tigers and Black Knights entered with one blemish on the loss.
Marcus Stokes ensured Memphis would remain afloat in the race. The quarterback completed 29-of-35 passes for 371 yards
and four touchdowns without an interception in his best performance since arriving from the Division II ranks. Stokes also added 30 yards and a touchdown as a runner, guiding the Tigers’ to a decisive 49-22 victory over Army.
Memphis’ offense had been burdened by slow starts in recent games against Tulane and East Carolina, but the Tigers reversed that trend against a red-hot Army team. The Tigers registered touchdowns on four of their five first half possessions, as Stokes established strong connections with wide receivers Jermane Hayes and Jemyri Davis and tight end Hunter Tipton. Hayes logged the first two scores in a 9-reception, 86-yard outing. Davis amassed two scores later in the contest in a 4-catch, 75-yard day, and Tipton was essential to moving the ball downfield with five receptions for 86 yards. Stokes finished a near-perfect first half 20-of-24 with 258 yards and three touchdowns, and one of those incompletions was a spike.
The Tigers never trailed, but Army matched Memphis at 7-7 and 14-14. However, the Tigers broke away in the late second quarter and early third when the defense began to stifle the Black Knights’ option attack. Army quarterback Cale Hellums averaged 180 rushing yards across his last three games, running in 10 touchdowns over that timeframe. Despite only recording one tackle behind the line of scrimmage the entire nightk, Memphis countered the star rushing quarterback better than any other defense did this year, limiting Hellums to 34 yards on 13 attempts.
Three consecutive Memphis touchdowns built the lead to 35-14 before Army broke the drought in the late third quarter. The Black Knights had two opportunities to slice the deficit to one score when Memphis’ offense began to slow down, but the Tigers’ defense held firm.
During the final stretch, the run game and the cornerbacks put on the finishing touches for the Tigers. Jaylin Carter produced 96 yards and two touchdowns, while Manny Covey added 57 in a productive day for the Memphis running backs. Then, Chauncey Logan Jr. and Ellis Ellis Jr. secured interceptions on Army’s final two series to move the Tigers to 18 takeaways on the year — tied for fourth in the FBS.
Army (5-3, 4-2 American) saw its four-game conference win streak shatter in front of 32,502 fans in Memphis. A trend continued for the Black Knights: when Hellums rushes for at least 80 yards, Army is 5-0. When he rushes for under 60, the Black Knights are 0-3. It will be an uphill battle for Jeff Monken’s team to return to its first conference championship game since 2024 after dropping the pivotal battle to the Tigers. Only two conference games remain — East Carolina on Nov. 21 and Rice on Nov. 28.
Memphis (7-2, 4-1 American) extends a 13-year streak of finishing .500 or better. The Tigers have now recorded seven wins or more in every season since 2014, except for 2021, when they finished 6-6 but had their Hawaii Bowl axed due to COVID-19. Memphis improved to 5-0 at home under first-year head coach Charles Huff, and the tigers remain alive in the American championship race, trailing North Texas and UTSA — two teams that are not on the Tigers’ schedule — by one game.
