The San Francisco Giants made a roster switch on Thursday, ahead of their day game finale against the Cleveland Guardians. And it hurts an already struggling bullpen.
Prior to the game, the Giants announced that right-handed reliever Keaton Winn had been placed on the 15-Day Injured List, retroactive to Wednesday, with right elbow neuritis. It’s the second IL stint of the season for Winn, who has been one of the few bright spots in one of the sport’s worst bullpens. In 44 appearances this year, Winn has a 3.35
ERA and a 3.85 FIP, though he’s struck out only 33 batters in 43 innings.
It seems likely that Winn has been dealing with some elbow soreness for a while. After being used fairly frequently earlier in the year, Winn was used just twice over the last eight days, and struggled. Prior to those last two outings, he had a 2.88 ERA and a 3.50 FIP.
One oddity as well: Winn last pitched on the 16th, but his IL stint is retroactive to the 19th. Unclear what that’s about.
Taking Winn’s spot is someone who was already with the team, lefty reliever Reiver Sanmartin. The five-year veteran, who has a 7.45 ERA and a 5.98 FIP in 10 outings this year, was optioned just one day ago when the Giants called up Matt Wilkinson. San Francisco surely kept Sanmartin in Cleveland on the taxi squad, in case a move like this was required.
