Like most WWE fans, I was very curious to hear John Cena reveal all the new details about his Classic when he returned to Raw this week.
Cena did indeed talk about when and where the the John Cena Classic is happening, and he introduced a new championship belt to go along with it. He also named Cody Rhodes as the first star to enter the John Cena Classic, before inviting Zilla Fatu
during this week’s NXT.I have seen criticism online about Cena saying the fan vote for his Classic would be exclusive
to loyal members of Club WWE. That part doesn’t bother me, perhaps because I’m amused by the ways WWE keeps trying to make that membership worth the high price, but also because I’m skeptical about any such vote not being worked by WWE at the end.
The big problem I had with Cena’s triple announcement is that his new details about the Classic still didn’t explain how the concept actually works. For example, is the John Cena Classic a tournament, or will each wrestler only have one match? How many wrestlers will participate? Will it consist entirely of singles matches, or is there more variety? What exactly are WWE fans voting on?
In other words, Cena’s announcement left a lot to be desired because I still know practically nothing about the rules of the John Cena Classic. It would be like if AEW didn’t bother to provide any rules for Clockwork Carnage when announcing the new match type last month.
Maybe this is all part of WWE’s master plan to slowly roll out these necessary details during Cena’s upcoming appearances on Raw, SmackDown, and Survivor Series. But given the way WWE rushed the reveal of the John Cena Classic back in May when it was clear they didn’t know how it would work, there’s part of me that thinks maybe they are still trying to hammer out these important details.
Are you super hyped for the John Cena Classic after learning this week’s new information about it? Are you surprised that Cena didn’t actually explain the rules and how it works? Give me your thoughts in the comments below, Cagesiders.
