Following a dominant victory over Alavés to return to winning ways in La Liga, Barcelona are back in Champions League action for a massive European test against Premier League side Aston Villa at the Greatest Stadium on Earth on Tuesday night.
Barça come into this one looking for their third win in four League Phase games to stay in strong contention for the Top 8, and there’s plenty of pressure on the Blaugrana to finally win a “big game” after high-profile defeats to PSG and Real Madrid.
A win against Aston Villa won’t exactly quiet all the noise, but it’s an important step. Villa have won all three games so far in the League Phase and are incredibly well-coached by Unai Emery, who has undertaken a major squad rebuild this summer and is still trying to find his best team, which is the main reason for Villa’s struggles in the Premier League.
But they are a very tough team to play against in Europe, and won the Europa League in dominant fashion last season and have carried that form into the Champions League in the current campaign. Emery hasn’t done well at Camp Nou, however, with only one win and 14 losses in his 15 visits to Barça’s home in his managerial career, including that 6-1 defeat as PSG manager in 2017.
Emery has evolved and become a much better coach and game-manager since that night, and his work at Villa is truly masterful. His teams are tactically sound and very dangerous in their ability to create problems in all sorts of ways: Villa can dominate possession or play on the counter with the same effectiveness, and can adapt to any opponent and any situation.
They will come to Camp Nou with the goal of being very organized in their usual 4-4-2 mid-block, but they will also not be afraid to press high and try to force mistakes in Barça’s half. The Blaugrana were prone to big mistakes in possession in their losses to Paris and Madrid, and Emery will try to create that same type of chaos when Barça have the ball.
Villa have a ton of attacking talent as well, and Nicolas Jackson is a man reborn since moving to Villa after quiet stints at Chelsea and Bayern Munich. Villa will offer a major counter-attacking threat, and will be very tough to break down as well.
This is a very good team that will require the very best from a Barça side still struggling with injuries at the back, but midfield and attack remain intact for now and the Blaugrana’s front six will need to bring their A-games to survive a major challenge and take three much-needed points at home.
Let’s dance.
POSSIBLE LINEUPS
Barcelona (4-3-3): Joan; Fariñas, Cubarsí, Martín, Cancelo; Fermín, Rodri, Pedri; Yamal, Raphinha, Gordon
Aston Villa (4-2-3-1): Suzuki; Cash, Lindelöf, Torres, Maatsen; Gomes, Kamara; McGinn, Manzambi, Mbaye; Jackson
PREDICTION
Villa deserve a ton of respect and will be a brutal opponent with a great plan from their excellent coach, but I think Barça will be hungry to show they are good enough to win a big game and prove their worth at the biggest stage: 3-2 to the home team.
