Vincent Kompany surprised everyone by rolling out an unusual team designed to confuse English outfit Arsenal in the Champions League. Kim Min-jae was preferred over undisputed starter Jonathan Tah, which Kompany implied had nothing to do with form or favoritism.
“Playing an important role in a game like this [Arsenal] doesn’t always mean starting,” the Belgian coach said (via Sky Germany as captured by X account @iMiaSanMia). “The whole team is important, not just for this game, but also for the challenges
ahead. We simply need everyone. That’s my priority.”
Bayern director of sport Max Eberl also gave his take on the situation. “The coach picks the team and gives it careful thought,” Eberl said. “Min-jae and Upa didn’t do a bad job against Leipzig. You can keep a functioning partnership together for the time being and say: ‘Okay, now we can bring in some fresh legs with Jonathan Tah.’”
