On Friday, Detroit Lions assistant general manager Ray Agnew talked to the media, and revealed that he interviewed for the Minnesota Vikings’ general manager position this offseason. It was reported that the Vikings requested to interview him, but it had not yet been confirmed if he went through with the request.
Agnew said he was excited for the opportunity, and reiterated that becoming an NFL general manager remains a goal for him—all the while expressing his gratitude for the job he current has
in Detroit.
“I’m very, very satisfied and happy here in my job here. I love working with the group we have here, but I was excited about the opportunity,” Agnew said. “Do I want to be a GM? I think you asked that question. Yes I do. So, excited about the opportunity, but I’m excited about being here also.”
Agnew will spend at least one more season in Detroit, as it was reported on Saturday that the Vikings are hiring Nolan Teasley—former Seahawks assistant GM—as their next general manager. Agnew apparently knew this was coming, as he indicated he was no longer up for the job in Minnesota.
Agnew following Lions general manager Brad Holmes from Los Angeles to Detroit back in 2021. With the Rams he served as the director of pro personnel, but upon being hired by the Lions he was promoted to assistant general manager—the position he’s held for the past five seasons.
As for what he needs to do to take that jump to NFL GM, Agnew doesn’t have an answer. That’s for the hiring teams to answer.
“I can’t answer that. Some team would have to answer that question for you what I need. Obviously, I didn’t have what they were looking for, but I’m excited, happy where I’m at,” Agnew said. “Enjoy working here every day. I’ve always been wherever my feet (are) at. That’s where I’m working.”
