For the third year in a row, the Cyclone Women’s Basketball Team took on the St. Thomas (MN) Tommies in the non-conference schedule and for the the third year in a row, it was all Iowa State.
Audi Crooks
and Addy Brown were exactly who Cyclone fans, and WBB fans in general, have come to know them as. Dominant. Efficient. Crooks led all scorers with maybe the quietest 20 points you could have, while Addy Brown was on triple-double watch before not playing in the fourth quarter as the game was out of hand with 11 points, 6 rebounds, and 6 assists. As calm, cool, and collected you could be in a season opener, and it helped fuel the rest of the team who played about as complete a game as you could’ve asked for.
All 13 Cyclones played, and all of them were on the floor at least six minutes. Of that, 12 of them scored at least a point, 11 of them made a field goal, 10 of them registered an assist, 12 had a rebound…. Basically what I’m saying is the whole team got involved. You get the picture. That’s not to say that all of them will play this big of a role throughout the year, but it was a major stepping stone for many players who are looking to find their place in this roster.
It was an all-around stellar performance from the Cyclones as they ran away with the 85-36 victory. Holding the Tommies to just 25% from the floor and 10.5% from deep while also forcing 20 turnovers. Even bigger than all of that, the Tommies had just two assists the entire game. The Cyclones contested passes, jumped lanes, got deflections, and were just relentless on the defensive side of the ball, particularly following the first quarter. It seemed this Cyclone team has found it’s spark, or should I say sparks, on the defensive side in Jada Williams, Evangelia Paulk, and Reese Beaty.
A dominant victory that saw the entire squad in the game, and as good of a start as coach Bill Fennelly could’ve drawn up. It’s a date with Southern up next as the Cyclones play host to Jaguars out of the SWAC on Wednesday night on ESPN+ at 6:30.
