The expectations for Germany at EURO 2028 should be high.
Very high.
Jürgen Klopp is not taking over one of the world’s biggest football nations to simply make the team competitive again. He is there to restore Germany to the very top of international football. With four years to build his team, establish his ideas, and develop the next generation, there should be a clear expectation that Germany is competing for the title.
That does not necessarily mean winning the tournament is the only acceptable
outcome. International football can be decided by one moment, one bad call, or one penalty shootout. But Germany should absolutely be expected to reach the semifinals, and anything less would likely feel like a disappointment given the caliber of the coach now in charge.
Klopp also has the advantage of inheriting a talented, yet flawed, generation. Jamal Musiala, Florian Wirtz, Nathaniel Brown, Aleksandar Pavlović, Lennart Karl, and other young stars could be entering their prime by 2028. The challenge will be building the right balance between those players and Germany’s established veterans.
The pressure will be enormous, but that is exactly what should happen when Jürgen Klopp becomes Germany’s head coach.
