Freshly minted Mainz 05 head coach Urs Fischer is a positive fellow, so even though his squad will be missing several key players, the coach feels like his team still has a chance against league leaders
Bayern Munich.
“Paul (Nebel) and Dome (Dominik Kohr) are still suspended. Phillipp (Mwene) and Robin (Zentner) are also unavailable, that’s well known. We’re waiting for further examinations in regards to Silvan (Widmer); Nadiem (Amiri) was able to train well today,” said Fischer (as captured by Mainz 05’s social media account). “It’ll be all to play for from the first whistle, it’s possible to get something from any game. If we can produce a positive performance out there and work hard to get the basics right, anything is possible on the day.
“The boys have given a lot to earn themselves the right to play more European football in 2026. Of course, we’re going to be delighted with that.”
Fischer wants to make as much progress as he can heading into the winter break. Being a new coach at this stage of the season is not easy, so Fischer wants to do what he can, while he can. The veteran manager just knows the odds are stacked against him vs. Bayern Munich.
“We’ve got three more fixtures to go before the winter break, and of course, we want to do as well as possible. The focus right now is on Munich, afterwards we look to the next match. We need to take each game as it comes,” said Fischer. “It doesn’t get any tougher than a trip to Munich, although of course we need to stay positive, anything could happen. It won’t work to just dig in and sit back. You need to find the right balance.”
