A few weeks ago, the Toronto Blue Jays & Minnesota Twins clashed in a tight series that saw MN quite unexpectedly take two-of-three from the defending champs.
Film fans will know that the sequel is usually not as good as the original. For every Godfather II or The Dark Knight there are seemingly ten Jaws II’s or Son of the Mask’s.
Yet, this isn’t the case in all occupations. Boxing, for instance, has a particularly strong history of rematches being even better than the first go-round. A few notable
examples…
- Joe Louis vs Max Schmeling II (1938): The Brown Bomber put Schmeling on the mat to avenge his previous loss to the German poster boy for Adolf Hitler’s Third Reich (actually a very unfair labelling of Max considering he was never a Nazi Party member and did not speak on politics at all).
- Muhammad Ali vs Joe Frazier III (1975): Though difficult to top their initial clash, the Thrilla in Manila saw the iconic duo once again go practically blow-for-blow—as pictured in the header—for 14 rounds before Eddie Futch (Smokin’ Joe’s trainer) stopped the contest out of fear for his fighter’s well-being.
- Sugar Ray Leonard vs Roberto Duran II (1980): The famous “No Mas” contest in which Duran quit in the middle of a round.
- Evander Holyfield vs Riddick Bowe II (1993): A solid fight won by the Real Deal Holyfield, but perhaps best known for this bizarre in-match incident featuring a man hang-gliding into the ring…
- Evander Holyfield vs Mike Tyson II (1997): Did Holyfield ever participate in a normal boxing match?! After upsetting a post-prison Iron Mike in 1995, this rematch was an
armfulearful to say the least.
Can the Twins gain a split decision in this rematch with the Blue Birds?
