Thomas Müller just has that winning gene. Having left Bayern Munich after 25 years at the club in a heart breaking farewell, the legend of the sport made his switch to the MLS but surprised many by choosing
the join the American league by moving to Canada’s Vancouver Whitecaps. Not coincidentally, Vancouver suddenly experienced a spike in form, going on a club-record breaking season to reach 2nd place in the Conference at the time of writing and reaching the MLS Cup final for the very first time. Not bad for a 35-year-old has been, eh?
Nor has Müller lost his charm or sense of humor. As seen on his YouTube channel, Müller sat down for a media conference ahead of the final, with the two time Champions league winner talking up the importance of the MLS Cup final because “because it’s the only [upcoming] final. This final is the most important thing in my life.” He then leaned back, grinned and said “that was a good line, right?”
But Müller and his teammates are not the only ones who recognizes the importance of the match. Over in Munich, his former teammates and head coach are very invested in the match: “We wish Thomas the win – all of Munich will be supporting Vancouver,” head coach Vincent Kompany said in the press conference ahead of Bayern’s Bundesliga match against VfB Stuttgart, as captured by @iMiaSanMia. “You still get the feeling that Thomas is still with us. We’ve followed everything. It’s typical of Thomas that he chooses a club in Canada and then goes straight to the final with them. It’s not luck, it just happens to Thomas.”
Well said. With all of Munich and Vancouver behind them, Müller and Co. will make a serious run for the trophy on Saturday.
