Deco has admitted it’s too early to talk about Hansi Flick’s future at Barcelona amid speculation the club are keen to extend the German coach’s contract.
Flick’s current deal expires in 2027 and, although he’s happy at the club, he’s said publicly he’s in no rush to talk about an extension.
Deco says he understands the situation and that now is not the right time to be asking Flick to put pen to paper on a new contract.
“Besides being a great coach and a great person, the team needed a change in management.
Someone with the sensitivity to handle a dressing room that isn’t easy, with veterans and young players eager to succeed,” he told RAC 1.
“Hansi understands this perfectly. He has a year left on his contract, but now it’s time to focus on what’s important. It’s too early to talk about the future. There was talk of a longer contract, but he preferred to take things one step at a time.”
Talk of Flick’s future will undoubtedly crop up again between now and the end of the season.
He’s also said the outcome of the presidential elections will influence this thinking, with Joan Laporta expected to announce a date for the next elections in the coming weeks.
