Newcastle United seem to already be calculating the financial implications of potentially missing out on European qualification, which looks more likelier by the day, with contract extension and summer transfers planning closely tied to the outcome of the season.
According to Chronicle Live’s Lee Ryder, the threat of no European football in Tyneside next season is “looming large above St James’ Park,” with prize money and associated revenue streams central to the club’s budgeting for their summer
business.
“The Champions League has clocked up £56m for Newcastle this year so far in prize money,” Ryder wrote, noting additional income from matchdays and commercial activity.
Ryder added that even participation in the Europa League or Europa Conference League “would still be vital as far as PSR rules are concerned.”
As things stand, Newcastle—currently 12th in the table, sitting on 39 points—would need a near-perfect finish to match last season’s 66-point total and finishg between fifth and sixth, according to last year’s standings.
Brighton could only finish in eighth place on 61 points last season, with Nott Forest’s 65 points marking the cut for Europa League football. Alas, the margin for error for the Magpies is thin, to say the least.
Ryder suggested that uncertainty could delay decisions on player contracts.
“It means Howe might be left sweating on certain contract renewals,” Ryder wrote, referencing Fabian Schar and Kieran Trippier among those awaiting clarity. Emil Krafth is expected to depart, while other squad players are also approaching the end of their deals.
Ryder compared the current situation to two years ago when extensions for Paul Dummett and Matt Ritchie were withdrawn after Newcastle missed out on European qualification. Obviously, those two were definitely not of NUFC’s level these days, but losing Trippier (to a lesser extent) and Schar (to a far bigger one) would be a blow for the Magpies.
Alongside cost considerations, in better news, Ryder reported that Newcastle have received approval to expand their scouting and analytics departments as they continue restructuring recruitment operations, which might be very needed to find gems within reach rather than having to complete budget-safe transfers because of the no-Euro situation.
