It’s been a long time since we had to feel the sting of a Seattle Seahawks loss, going way back to November 2025.
Yeah, it still sucks.
Have you ever woken up in a bad mood for no reason? That was me this morning. The Seahawks had a chance to flip my mood around with an early game against a (seemingly) outmatched Washington Commanders team. However, no one accounted for the fact that Marcus Mariota is undefeated as a starter against Seattle. That statistical anomaly continued today as he led the Commanders to a stunning
33-31 win over the Seahawks. Obviously, my mood got worse.
For as perturbed as I’m feeling as I write this, it doesn’t hold a candle to just how horribly the Seahawks played for much of the game today. The offense couldn’t move the ball on the ground and turned the ball over three times. On defense, the Dark Side bent and broke, giving up three TDs and key third down conversions with the game on the line. Special teams isn’t getting off the hook, as Jason Myers kicked the ball out of bounds directly after Seattle tied the game, immediately setting Washington up near FG range.
Seahawks Droppings
- For his first game back, Sam Darnold played well…except for one throw. Driving for the potential leading score, Darnold threw a late game pick-six. During the winning streak, he largely avoided those throws. I see that INT throw off the helmet as mostly just bad luck. The one over the middle was much more egregious.
- Jadarian Price was put on a very short leash after his early fumble, the second for him in three games. The conditions were crappy, but that’s not an excuse. As awesome as I think Price will be, he won’t be able to show it if they can’t trust him to hold on to the ball.
- Jaxon Smith-Njigba is amazing, but even he had an easy drop of a potential first down today. Still, he kept dragging the Seahawks back into the game and continues to show why he’s arguably the best WR in the NFL.
- The thin depth at safety is starting to show. No offense to AJ Finley, but he’s a quantum leap below Julian Love. Part of the defense’s struggles are related to being short-handed. That’s not an excuse, it’s just a fact. The guys playing meaningful snaps in this game aren’t nearly as experienced nor talented as Love. Hopefully his calf injury is a short term thing.
- Mike Macdonald won’t be very happy with his defense today. Seattle couldn’t get a turnover against the Mariota-led Commanders, and gave up key third-down conversions leading to both the FG to go down 27-24 and allowing the Commanders to run out the clock. The fact that those last two conversions were running plays on third and long really stand out. Washington was almost conceding the play to keep the clock running, and the Seahawks couldn’t stop them.
- Penalties were an issue again today, much like the preseason. Just before Darnold’s pick-six, Seattle had an illegal formation penalty that dropped them back to 1st and 15 when they were already almost in FG range, basically taking the run game completely out of that decision. The AJ Finley penalty was a huge call at a pivotal point. Seattle had stopped Washington on 3rd down and would’ve gotten the ball back with the game tied 24-24. Instead, the Commanders would go on to get a FG. I really don’t know how you coach Finley to play that any differently. The guy lowered his head into Finley, and he did nothing wrong. Don’t misunderstand me, the refs were not the reason the Seahawks lost this game. Seattle did that to themselves.
Ultimately, I’m annoyed, but I believe the Seahawks will be fine. This game feels eerily similar to all three of the Seahawks losses last season particularly the Tampa Bay Buccaneers game. They were undermanned in the secondary, played like crap on defense, turned the ball over, and were still in position to potentially win the game. Same thing against the Commanders. The fact that Seattle can play so terribly in all three phases and still have a chance at the end just goes to show that they’re a really, really good team. I hope this pisses them off and sends them on another (at least) 12 game winning streak.
