The debate over the world’s best right winger continues to rage on, and former Chelsea assistant manager Jody Morris has made it clear where he stands. While many supporters and pundits continue to praise Barcelona sensation Lamine Yamal, Morris believes Bayern Munich star Michael Olise has surpassed the Spanish youngster based on current form.
“Lamine Yamal is phenomenal, and what he’s achieved at 19 is outstanding. He was La Liga Player of the Year, but he was nowhere near Lionel Messi’s level in the tournament.
He was better in the Euros, and I don’t think he should be in the conversation,” Morris told BOYLE Sports, who offer the latest football odds.“If you are talking about someone in his position, Michael Olise is ahead of him. If Olise had scored a few more goals in this tournament, he would be right up there. If you’re picking a World XI right now, Olise is in it.”
It is certainly a bold statement, but there is a strong argument behind it. Olise enjoyed a remarkable campaign with Bayern Munich, combining creativity, efficiency, and consistency at the highest level. His ability to unlock defenses, create chances, and contribute goals made him one of the Bundesliga’s most dangerous attacking players while also becoming a key figure in Vincent Kompany’s system.
Yamal’s talent is undeniable, and at just 19 years old, his ceiling remains incredibly high. Few players have accomplished what he already has at such a young age, and he is expected to be one of football’s defining stars for the next decade.
However, Morris is evaluating the present rather than projecting the future. Based solely on performances over the past season and the World Cup, there is a legitimate case that Olise has been the more complete and influential player. Whether that ultimately translates into a place in the World XI is up for debate, but Morris’s comments highlight just how highly the Bayern Munich winger is now regarded among respected voices in the game.
