CMLL is bringing in international stars from AEW, NJPW, ROH, RevPro, MLW, and MLP for the Grand Prix event.
The Grand Prix is one of my favorite matches on the CMLL calendar, because the fans treat it like a big deal. They get rowdy in support of Mexico, as if it were a World Cup game. The concept is a torneo cibernetico with luchadores representing Mexico versus a team of wrestlers from around the world. Only one man remains standing as the ultimate winner.
This year’s CMLL Grand Prix for the men
takes place on August 7 from Arena Mexico. The full teams have been revealed.
- Mexico: Mistico, Ultimo Guerrero, Volador Jr., Hechicero, Bárbaro Cavernario, Angel de Oro, Soberano Jr., Templario, Mascara Dorada, Titan, Xelhua
- World: Bandido (Mexico) from AEW, Claudio Castagnoli (Switzerland) from AEW, El Bastardo PAC (UK) from AEW, Orange Cassidy (USA) from AEW, Roderick Strong (USA) from AEW, Douki (Japan) from NJPW, Yujiro (Japan) from NJPW, Blake Christian (USA) from ROH, Austin Aries (USA) from MLW, Leon Cage (UK) from RevPro, Rohan Raja (UK) from MLP
Mistico and Bandido are the team captains. Even though Bandido is Mexican, Julio Cesar Rivera explained (at the end of CMLL Informa) that the luchador is representing AEW for the Grand Prix. Thus, the reason Bandido is on the world team.
Mistico is the reigning Grand Prix winner taking home the trophy in 2025. He also won the prize in 2023. Claudio uppercut his way to victory in 2024. Other past winners in the field include Ultimo Guerrero (2006, 2007) and Volador Jr. (2016, 2019, 2022). Fun fact: Val Venis won the Grand Prix in 1997 under the name Steel.
