Chimaev vs. Strickland took place May 9 at the Prudential Center in Newark, N.J. Khamzat Chimaev (15-1) and Sean Strickland (31-7) squared off in the main event clash. The fight aired live on Paramount+.

Round 1
The security is out of the cage and they smile at each other. They touch gloves and the fight is on! “USA” chants, and Chimaev immediately shoots and he takes Strickland down in a matter of seconds! Strickland lands short punches while Chimaev works for the back take. Chimaev working non-stop for that. He’s basically dragging Strickland on the ground to find the better position. And he goes for the choke already but Strickland avoids that. Chimaev won’t let Strickland escape, solid in his back now. Strickland kicks the fence to try and escape, but that doesn’t work. “Khamzat” chants from the crowd now, followed by boos. Strickland scrambles but Chimaev won’t let him out of the ground. Chimaev gets the mount now but Strickland gets him out of there. Strickland is back to his feet but Chimaev slams him down one more time. Chimaev is like a backpack glued to Strickland’s back, and he works on a choke. Strickland defends, and round is over. MMA Fighting scores the round 10-9 Chimaev.
Round 2
Strickland doesn’t sit on the stool in between rounds but is breathing heavy.
Round two starts and Strickland lands a one-two. Chimaev fires back with a right hand and jab to the body. Strickland dodges a punch and connects another one back. Chimaev blocking most of Strickland’s punches so far. Chimaev shoots but Strickland defends, ending on top position now! Strickland can’t do much, and he allows Chimaev to get back up. Chimaev shoots another takedown and fails again! He’s on bottom one more time, and looks tired already. Wow. Strickland not landing too many strikes but not many people pictured this so early in the fight. MMA Fighting scores the round 10-9 Strickland. The crowd goes nuts.
Round 3
Strickland jabs Chimaev to start round three. And over and over. They’re exchanging jabs now. Two minutes into the round and still no takedown attempts for Chimaev. Strickland’s jabs continue to connect. Chimaev doubling up with the jabs and the right hand doesn’t find the target. A round of jabs for both fighters, basically. Chimaev jabs and there’s blood coming out of Strickland’s nose now. Zero takedown attempts for the champion in this round. Hard round to score as they went with jabs for five minutes. Round 4
Chimaev smiles at Strickland, and tells him “I love you” before rounds begins. Chimaev throwing jabs to the body now. And an overhand right that connects. Strickland fires back with a right as well. Chimaev with a body kick Strickland jabs again. Chimaev has Strickland backed against the fence and lands two good lefts but still won’t shoot for a takedown. Chimaev secures a takedown with a minute left in round four! He’s not nearly as aggressive as in round one, but enough to keep Strickland trapped against the fence for the remaining of the round. Round 5
Chimaev’s cornermen — including Arman Tsarukyan — ask him to go for the body and finish with the wrestling. Meanwhile, Strickland’s coach show him Chimaev looks exhausted across the cage.
Chimaev gets the takedown seconds into the round but Strickland is back up almost immediately. Strickland nearly takes him down! They remain clinched for a few seconds before being back in the center. Strickland jabs and jabs, Chimaev fires back. A good right hand for Strickland connects. And again. Chimaev misses with an overhand right. Strickland’s jabs continue to find the target. Chimaev goes for another takedown with 80 seconds left and has a hard time getting it. Strickland back up against the fence, and down again. Back to the center of the cage they go with 40 seconds left, and they’re throwing at will. Chimaev missing big right hands, Strickland with the jabs. They embrace in the end. Another close round to score. Wow. MMA Fighting scores the round 10-9 Strickland.
