Maryland football is set to host former VMI linebacker Stephen Dean on Monday and Tuesday, bringing in an intriguing, high-upside option in an area in need of depth.
Dean has spent his entire career at Virginia Military Institute in Lexington, Virginia, where he consistently improved his production. As a redshirt junior in 2025, he finished the season with 62 solo tackles and 117 total tackles, numbers that were 11th-best and 10th-best, respectively, of any player at the FCS level.
Dean has one year of eligibility left. He was rated as a three-star transfer by 247Sports.
Maryland has three seemingly entrenched inside linebackers in Daniel Wingate, Trey Reddick and CJ Smith, but behind them, the Terps lack the depth they have at other positions. Of the seven other rostered linebackers, only three saw action in multiple games, and two were used on special teams. If head coach Mike Locksley and the rest of the coaching staff like what Dean presents, he could be an under-the-radar useful addition for Maryland.
