For the Arizona Cardinals, what is happening with Jacoby Brissett is nothing short of fascinating.
You moved on from a quarterback and did not add anyone who could be deemed as a quality starter.
You have basically the same thing in Gardner Minshew as you do in Brissett, but you as an organization made it known Brissett was the guy.
When news broke of the signing of Minshew the first conversation Jess and I had was about the fact he was going to make more money this year than Brissett.
If you had decided
to move on from Brissett, then that’s not an issue, but the fact that you let it be known he was the starter, put up a picture of his only win with the franchise in the practice facility, and basically did nothing of note at the position said to all of us Brissett is the guy… for this year.
So, why if that was all done is this “holdout” now entering this state?
Josh Weinfuss reported that the Cardinals and Brissett are “significantly” far apart in their negotiations.
This is just absurd.
If Brissett is your starter, then what is the hold up of just raising his base salary with some more guarantees that shows that?
Are you hedging because you are likely going to be bad and moving on to Beck? In which case, you are not wanting to pay Brissett for the full season? If so, that is incredibly dumb for an organization that is routinely under the cap. It’s one year, he’s gone after this year barring a miracle turnaround in a 2-15 record as a starter in his last 17 games with two organizations.
If he is asking for more than the $15.5 million Aaron Rodgers is being paid, or wants a “long term” deal in the sense of two or so years, then just move on.
The way this is playing out though there are no winners. Something both parties involved seem accustomed to… not winning.
