I’m not going to rummage back through 14 of the last 18 Big East box scores to double check to see if this was Marquette men’s soccer’s most absurdly ironic loss in some times, but man, the way this one went is pretty up there at the very least.
In the 23rd minute, UConn’s Alfonso Arredondo fired a ball out in front of the Marquette net. I thiiiiiink that’s Tristan Ronnestad-Stevens in the way of the ball, jumping into the air, and twisting his body in a manner that redirects the attempt on frame
and past MU keeper Cameron Simpson for a 1-0 lead.
Shouts to UConn’s social media team for actually clipping the video and posting it. They credited it to Arredondo, but officially, that’s an own goal.
That was part of a first half where Marquette got outshot 8-4 and just one of MU’s shots came after the Huskies went up 1-0. The second half was tilted very heavily towards the Golden Eagles as UConn focused more and more on not pushing the ball up the field, and ultimately, Marquette outshot the visitors 9-3 in the second half. Four of those were on frame, meaning UConn keeper Kyle Durham made six saves to post a clean sheet shutout victory against Marquette.
Yep, that own goal was the only goal of the entire match. Marquette is now 1-4-0 in Big East play and 8-5-1 overall. UConn moves to 6-6-2 overall and 2-2-0 in the league, and yeah, that’s raising a lot of questions about falling 1-0 on an own goal for MU’s 15th Big East loss in their last 19 contests.
Marquette is now in last place in the Midwest Division with just three points from their win over Butler, six points behind Creighton and Xavier in first with nine points. The Golden Eagles trail…. yep, UConn by three points in the race for the second wild card spot in the Big East tournament. Needless to say, that own goal carries a bit of weight in deciding who’s going to the tournament semifinals right now.
Up Next: It’s a fun game I like to call Don’t Lose To DePaul. The Golden Eagles will hit the road to face DePaul on Saturday, October 24, with first kick at Wish Field set for 2pm Central, mostly because they don’t have lights there. The Blue Demons are 3-3-5 overall and 1-1-2 in Big East action this season after going to a scoreless draw with St. John’s on Friday, although they will host Western Michigan on Tuesday before Marquette comes to town.
