Welcome to the Morning Commute. Today we’re talking about Kevin Coleman, Jr.
It’s been a tough preseason for the former Mizzou receiver, who’s had to battle through injuries to even get on the field. But some good smoke started emerging from camp this week after Coleman finally got back on the field for full activities:
Two players who stood out were rookie draft picks, but after Caleb Douglas and Jacob Rodriguez drew the headlines on previous days, this time it was Chris Johnson and Kevin Coleman
Jr. who shined.
Coleman, taking part in team periods for the first time in a couple of weeks, had the two touchdown receptions on the day, one from Malik Willis and the other from Cam Miller.
He followed those good reps up with some action in the Dolphins’ 26-3 loss to the Giants. Coleman hauled in two catches on 5 targets for 32 yards receiving, including a 30-yard lob in double coverage. Given his status as a fifth round pick, you’d think some consistent play would be enough for the Dolphins to call him up to the big show rather than the practice squad. Let’s keep our fingers crossed that KC stays healthy for the time being.
Yesterday at Rock M and Rock M+
- In which Jamal Roberts may be the most important player on Mizzou’s offense for a few weeks:
“Jamal’s been phenomenal,” Drinkwitz said, “He was voted a captain by his teammates yesterday, and I think he’s responded the right way to exit camp.”
Sophomore wide receiver Donovan Olugbode, also expected to line up on the first team, has noticed Roberts’ growth off the field.
“[Jamal] stepping up and taking on more of a leader role and being a guy that you want the team to lean on and go to and just talk to about anything,” Olugbode said, “just stepping up and being that captain for the team, has definitely helped a lot.”
Helps that he would probably start at most Division I schools!

This week, this Tigers hosted just one event, the soccer home opener at the newly renovated Audrey J .Walton Stadium against SLU. Margo was on hand to shoot. While Missouri ultimately was shut out in the game, losing 0-1 on a first-half penalty kick, they did so in front of a program record crowd of 2,324.

- In which Mizzou Soccer fails to bring home the cross-state rivalry win:
Despite the constant pressure and numerous close calls, Missouri was never able to find the back of the net. Missouri finished with a 9-5 edge in total shots, though the sides were even on shots on goal, 2-2. Wilkerson made two saves in the loss, while Lewis matched her at the other end to preserve the shutout for Missouri State. The Bears were whistled for eight fouls to Missouri’s six, and the Tigers won the corner battle 10-3. Missouri State’s Caroline Orf picked up a yellow card in the 13th minute for unsporting behavior.
Mizzou moves to under .500 for the season.
