Barcelona president Joan Laporta has offered an update on Frenkie de Jong’s situation at the club as he is now into the final 12 months of his existing contract.
The club had been keen to avoid players
entering the final year of their existing deals but have still not managed to tie down the Dutchman to an extension.
Laporta says De Jong did ask for time to resolve some personal issues and is confident the matter will be closed soon.
“We’re working on this issue. Deco, who has done an extraordinary job with salaries and signings, has excelled this summer. With a very profitable investment,” he told reporters.
“We’re working on it. De Jong had a problem with his agent and asked us for time. He’s very motivated, he’s a good captain, he’s been a father… He’s a very important player. I’m confident Deco will give us good news soon.”
De Jong is expected to sign a new contract with Barcelona that will run until 2028.
