The San Francisco 49ers are officially expected to have Trent Williams at least for the the next season, if not longer. It was unclear if the 49ers and Williams would come to an agreement, but SF likely knew all along they’d get it done.
Williams is one of the best offensive linemen in the NFL, and he makes the 49ers better. That’s what the best players do. Now, with Williams secured, the 49ers can still draft around him, or even find someone as an understudy, but they do not have to fear replacing
Williams because they have the real thing.
The NFL Draft is coming, the interest and intrigue is building, it’s perhaps the most exciting time in the NFL outside of the actual games. Is the NFL Draft more exciting than free agency? I would say at face value, yes, because the draft is always exciting, whereas free agency can be hit and miss.

John Lynch: We want Trent Williams’ name and number “up in those rafters” (nbcsports)
“The uncertainty about Williams’ contract situation led many to mock a left tackle to the 49ers with the 27th overall pick. Williams’ new agreement eases the urgency to find a potential successor, though Lynch insists the 49ers always were going to draft the best player available.
“Probably not a whole lot,” Lynch said of how the agreement changes the 49ers’ approach to the draft. “I think, in general, what free agency did this year, what signing a guy like Trent and having some finality there, probably leaves you a little more comfortable in various scenarios. But I think what I liked about what we did in free agency this year is that there’s not a ton of needs.”
