Former Barcelona midfielder Denis Suarez has revealed the story behind Gerard Pique’s now legendary post about Neymar prior to his shock departure from the club.
Pique tweeted a picture of himself with his arm around Neymar and the words ‘Se queda’ (he stays) amid intense speculation about a transfer to Paris Saint-Germain.
Yet Neymar did indeed heading to France after his €222 million release clause was activated, and Suarez says the players all knew he would be leaving when Pique posted on social
media.
“There was a moment when we already knew he was leaving. With the ‘se queda’ photo, we already knew he was out,” he told the Post United.
“We were in preseason and all the commotion surrounding Neymar’s future caught us by surprise. But there was a moment when we already knew he was leaving. We started telling Piqué he didn’t have the balls to post it..and he did.”
Denis also admitted that the players did try to convince Neymar to stay but were unsuccessful, adding: “There were close teammates who tried to convince him to stay, and I also think he should have stayed; he was going to be huge at Barça. He was soon going to be number one.”
Neymar did end up going to PSG but the move really didn’t work out and it’s widely thought that he does now regret leaving Camp Nou.
