“Big News” is taking his loss in stride.
Professional Fighters League (PFL) Lightweight contender Paul Hughes came up short in his highly anticipated rematch against Usman Nurmagomedov, losing a controversial unanimous decision at PFL Championship Series 2 inside Coca-Cola Arena in Dubai, United Arab Emirates.
The fight was razor-close, with many fans and pundits believing Hughes did enough to dethrone the Russian standout. However, the scorecards told a different story — one judge shockingly awarded
all five rounds to Nurmagomedov, while another scored four in his favor.
After taking a few days to process the setback, Hughes broke his silence on social media, offering a measured and mature response.
“Apologies for the silence. Just been processing (and living).
Lay it all on the line and unfortunately it didn’t go in my favour once again.
It was a close fight, but I did not do enough. I did not fight in the way needed too to win (convincingly).
To beat one of the best fighters in the world in home territory you must operate at 110% percent.
I didn’t do that and it is my responsibility.
To my supporters I love you all so much. We’ve got many good nights ahead of us.
Still 28 years old with the world at my feet. This chapter is over now, but the next one is going to be even more special. Trust me on that.
Any adversity in my life has only propelled me to new heights. What I have achieved in the last 18 months since my last fight on Cage Warriors has been nothing short of special. 6 fights in 18 months has been a blessing, but it has also taken its toll.
Right now I need to take some forced time to let my body heal.
When I come back healthy, it is my MISSION, to make sure that no lightweight on the planet comes CLOSE to beating me ever again.
I will be the UNDISPUTED number one 155er in the world within the next 2 years. Mark this.
A new mission begins.
See you there.”
The 28-year-old Irishman has been one of the promotion’s fastest-rising stars, competing four times in just about a year. After his first loss to Nurmagomedov last year, he headlined PFL Europe 1, knocking out Bruno Miranda (watch highlights). All in all, he is 2-2 inside the PFL smartcage.
While fans would love to see a trilogy bout with Nurmagomedov as the two are absolute fireworks together, Hughes may need a win or two to re-enter title contention. Possible matchups include a fight with Archie Colgan, the current top contender, or another tough Russian in Alexander Shabliy.
Either way, don’t count “Big News” out — his story is far from over.
