Bayern Munich made early overtures in the 2026 summer transfer market to sign another left winger. The club made serious overtures towards signing Anthony Gordon from Newcastle United but were outbid by FC Barcelona. There were some rumors that they were after Liverpool FC’s Rio Ngumoha, but those rumors died as quickly as they started. After that, there was silence.
Then they renewed academy graduate Arijon Ibrahimovic’s contract.
The former Salernitana forward had impressed on loan FC Heidenheim
the previous season, was inked to a contract until 2028 and publicly given the backup role behind Luis Díaz. But the short contract renewal was perhaps the first clue that he had not convinced the Bayern bosses just yet.
Unfortunately, Ibrahimovic’s preseason performances were found lacking while youngsters such as Tim Binder and Maycon Cardozo impressed. More and more it seems as if preseason was a trial for Ibrahimovic, one which he has reportedly failed. According to reporters Kerry Hau and Florian Plettenberg (as captured by @iMiaSanMia), the 20-year-old can now leave the club:
There’s a turnaround in Arijon Ibrahimović’s situation. A late loan move this window is now a possibility. Bayern and the player are considering several loan inquiries, including from Union Berlin and Werder Bremen. Atalanta are interested in a permanent transfer.
The question now is obvious: If the backup LW is now leaving, who will be his replacement? Certainly, Bayern will not be hoping for star LW Luis Díaz to to play virtually every minute again, right? After such a drama free transfer window and efficient early work, perhaps the last few days of the window will provide some drama. Now is that good or not?
