It’s the return of the time-honored LL tradition of everyone talking about what kinds of music they’re enjoying lately. Baseball is over, the leaves are dropping faster than I can rake them, and the Brewers won the World Series a year after the Mariners got to within one win of their first World Series appearance. Maybe part of the cosmic curse of Seattle pro baseball is tied to how the Pilots were stolen away and now the curse is lifted. Here’s to hoping anyway. Onto today’s theme, which is FALL
MUSIC.
October may be over, but a post about fall music would be incomplete for me without mention of Glenn Danzig, the Misfits, and Samhain. Here’s an off-the-dome power ranking of his best records:
- Danzig II – Lucifuge
- Samhain – November Coming Fire
- Misfits – Static Age
- Danzig – self-titled
- Misfits – Earth AD
Danzig’s full set at the Pinkpop 1995 festival just got posted to YouTube recently and it’s unreal. Vintage rock n’ roller shit:
Okay, moving along from the spooky section of the fall music post. Once November hits, here are my top 3 all-time fall records:
American Football – self-titled
Cliche? Yes. The album responsible for creating an entire subgenre known as Midwestern emo? For sure. Still a banger? Yeah….yeah it is (/disassociates).
The Weakerthans – Reconstruction Site
For whatever reason, this reminds me of fall and specifically my college years in Bellingham, which is when this came out. I probably went a good 10 years without listening to it at one point, but I started putting it on again a couple years and was pleased to find that it has aged like fine wine. Unbelievably catchy stuff and lyrics that have lived rent-free in my head for over 2o years.
Songs: Ohia – The Lioness
I mean, throw a rock at Jason Molina’s massive discography and you’ll hit a record that is perfect for a melancholy fall day, but for some reason this one really has its teeth in me and has for decades now. You will find no better sad-yet-hopeful song about love than this one right here.
BONUS PICKS:
Here are a couple recent record that I have been loving lately:
Fontaines D.C. – Dopamine Chamber
PISS – you made me / skin on linen
(^if you’re not into abrasive music, that one will kick your teeth in. Fair warning!)
Dummy – Do You Love the Color of the Sky?
PLAYLISTS:
Share your best playlists in the comments on whatever platform you use for music. Here are few from me.
Good songs from bad years– My life and the world at large have not been doing well the last few years, but there have been lots of great songs in spite of that, so here are a bunch of them.
Death in Winter – Maybe it’s too early in the fall/winter for this, but black metal is always waiting for you when you’re ready for it.
Covers – A bunch of fun covers by recent bands.
YOUR TURN!
Hit the comments with your favorite fall records, fun playlists, and any other music recommendations you feel like sharing. Have fun!
