The Atlanta Braves received some unfortunate news on the pitching front Friday, as two starting pitchers will be undergoing surgery. Right-hander Hurston Waldrep will undergo Tommy John surgery, requiring him to miss all of the 2027 season. Fellow righty Spencer Schwellenbach will undergo surgery on the same elbow he fractured last year. There has not yet been a timetable for his return.
Waldrep last appeared in the majors in early July before he was optioned to the Gwinnett Stripers. Schwellenbach has yet to make his 2026 debut, and it will likely be some time before he is on the mound again.
The Atlanta pitching staff continues to take hit after hit, but hopefully all goes well on the recovery front for Waldrep and Schwelly.
