This past week, I asked the Phinsider faithful the following question:
What would you tell someone else as to why they should join the club of being a Miami Dolphins fan? What reason would you give someone else as to why to become a fan of the Phins despite the struggles of the last two-plus decades?
Below are some of your thoughts and answers-
coach k 13 tells us why he’s been a lifelong fan.
Live in Rochester NY for my whole life, been a Miami Dolphins fan since mid 70’s , it was my first pair of football
pajamas , my 2 brothers got the Steelers and Cowboys and I got the Dolphins and we all stayed with them teams for our life , not easy being a Dolphin fan living 45 minutes from Snuffalo but I support them proudly from my licence plates MIA1972 and stickers on my SUV to my flag flying proudly out front to my 2 Dolphins tattoo’s on my arms, Dolphins for life!!!!!
TheRoo1 makes a solid point that anyone is better than the Jets.
!. They aren’t the Jest.
2. If you dont live local to a team, pick one in a place you could/would enjoy visiting to see a game live.
3. They aren’t the Jest.
NeenerWhacker isn’t going to sell the idea to anyone.
I would not encourage anyone to become a fan. Wouldn’t do it to my worst enemy!
Gllmiaspr says don’t become a hardcore fan of any professional team.
Like most fans, I did not choose to be one. I became one after watching Marino. One of my two sons loves football and became a fan. My eldest son prefers boxing and watches a game now and then but is not a die fan and is probably happier for it,
Being a fan is not all that great. You are spending a tremendous amount of time discussing and maybe obsessing about something you have zero control over. There is a lot of satisfaction when the team wins which is offset by the pain you feel when the team loses. And only one team out of 32 will end the season in a winning note. Miami last won a SB 63 years ago. I should know better but I am hopeful that the season will be a lot better than expected and the beginning of another glorious run. 1971 all over again.
I would not advise anyone to become a die hard fan of any professional sports team. But if it happens the Golden Rule is to keep a healthy sense of humor. As one fan aptly stated, at least we are not the Jets.
Alley Gator became a fan after becoming a transplant.
I grew up in Detroit, then Cleveland. Been a Lions fans since, gave up on the Browns when they gave up on the fans and left for Baltimore. Was always a Marino fan, but when I moved to Florida 20+ years ago, I decided to pick a Florida team. Since the Lions and Tampa were once rivals in the NFC North, that was a no-go. Jacksonville? Meh. So the Dolphins it was, and still is.
DonnyCsonka says if you like to suffer, this is your team.
If you like a team for their colors and you’re a glutton for punishment with low expectations, Miami is your team. That said, I grew up in Seattle (before the Seahawks were a team), and Larry Csonka was/is my hero. Through both the highest of highs and lowest of lows, the Dolphins have remained MY team. When you make a choice of your favorite team, NEVER turn away from them.
FFFL66IBA&O believes that the reason to be a fan is obvious.
Here’s what I would tell them James.
We’re the MIAMI DOLPHIN’S THE GREATEST FOOTBALL TEAM!!!
C’MON HAF!!!
MIAMI235 makes a sound argument!
Simply put…….Because we are the GOOD GUYS !
MiamiItaliano highlights a South Florida attraction.
Uhhh…we have beaches?
PA phinphan says, come be a part of the best!
Why not be part of the best.
Best season ever!
Best uniforms ever!
Best QB ever!
Best head coach ever!
Best FB ever!
Best Center ever!
Best facilities ever!
Most importantly, the best fans ever!
surfla8 makes a point via sarcasm, a very solid point!
Who wouldn’t be a fan with that cool new frolicking stylized dolphin logo and the very imaginative rivalries uniform?
UpInPensacola says the reasons are easy to understand.
Easy.
The Dolphins are the original Florida NFL (eh, AFL) team.
Their present is not great, but their past is glorious. (Hopefully we are returning to the past.)
They’re a reunification point for the South Florida diaspora (and that is not played out well by Dolphins marketing at all, a lot of people have moved away or were permanently dislocated by Andrew).
Dolfanjoe says, “Come for the refreshments and stay for the pain.”
You could tell them the Kool Aid is free every off season ! You could tell them that things could not possibly get any worse ! This is a team on the rise and once there should be on top for years to come ! Cool colors and look at that Porpoise ! I mean Dolphin, the Mammel not the fish ! And what a past ! You can read about it in the Dictionary’s ! Of course you could just beat your children and tell them they are Fans for life ! Worked for me !
AlaTide says come on board because we almost did it.
Because we were 1 fluke play (Stabler’s knee was down) away from 3 straight Super Bowl wins and 4 straight appearances.
ArtistfomerlyknownasTua2Hill points out that there’s only one perfect team!
Well, there is that perfect season! We can still hang our hats that no other team has been able to do it. Or, it’s simply Miami! Dolphins are cool creatures, and our waters are loaded with them! It’s a lifestyle, and our Dolphins are a historical team regardless of what’s happened in the past 2 decades.
USMCFinzFreak believes he arrived here through a nefarious plan.
It was a psychological operation on a young boy (me) conducted by the Dolphins in the early 70’s. Since then, it’s been a case of Stockholm Syndrome.
That’s our selection of comments for this evening. There are apparently a lot of reasons to be a Miami Dolphins fan, and some that might make you think twice. I am sure that many long-time fans have questioned their choice more than a few times along the way, but we are still here! As always, thank you to each of you who took the time to join in and comment on our Phinsider Question Of The Day.
