Lamine Yamal faced the press on Tuesday ahead of Barcelona’s Champions League opener against Feyenoord
at Camp Nou.The teenager was asked about his team’s hopes of success and the importance of pressing, particularly after losing possession.
“You only have to look at the recent teams that have won titles, like PSG. If you don’t run, every team will beat you. For the team, if we want to win, we have to run. If you don’t run, you’re going to lose,” he answered.
“The Champions League is the main goal.
We’re all motivated. We have it in our minds. It’s the most special tournament. This year it could be with the players who have arrived, Gordon, Rodri, Adeyemi, Joao.
“On a team level, I want to keep winning titles, especially the Champions League. On a personal level, I want to improve every day. I’m very young, but by listening I can improve; that’s my goal.”
Yamal also spoke about his pride at being part of the captaincy group at Barcelona and insisted he does not mind being on the bench.
“It’s an honor to be captain of Barça at 19 years old. I’m grateful to my teammates for choosing me. I’m 19, but I want to live up to expectations. I’m happy. It makes me feel responsible. I’ll give my best for the team,” he added.
“I’m not afraid of being a substitute; we have enough players if that’s what the coach decides.”
Yamal is expected to start again on Wednesday after scoring twice in the 5-0 win over Valencia last time out.
