The 2026 Miami Dolphins are a rebuild in progress, even as the team prepares for Friday’s preseason opening game against the Washington Commanders. Miami has transitioned from the veteran-heavy team of the Mike McDaniel era to a much younger team under new head coach Jeff Hafley, and they are constantly on the lookout for additional talent to bring into the roster.
On Monday, that search turned to an AFC East division rival’s roster. Miami and the New England Patriots completed a trade yesterday,
bringing offensive lineman Caedan Wallace to South Florida. The Dolphins sent New England a 2028 sixth-round pick for Wallace, while also receiving a 2029 seventh-round pick in the deal.
Wallace was selected in the third round of the 2024 NFL Draft by the Patriots, but was expected to be waived by New England. The Dolphins made the trade to avoid Wallace hitting the waiver wire, and now he will have a chance to jump start his career in Miami. According to Miami Dolphins on SI reporter Alain Poupart, the move fits Miami’s type this offseason:
As the Miami Dolphins keep making roster moves ahead of the restart that is the 2026 season, every player released by another team will be viewed in the context of whether they should bring him in as they keep looking for hidden gems.
But the Dolphins clearly have a type, so fans shouldn’t look as any new free agent as a potential addition, and that applies to those veterans still on the market.
That type, if you’ve been paying attention, clearly is failed former first-round picks or early-round picks or young unproven players looking to, well, prove themselves and prove they can contribute to an NFL team.
