When Bayern Munich board member for sport Max Eberl inked Luis Díaz away from Liverpool FC last summer, it unlocked a new level for the club’s attack.
The chemistry between Díaz and fellow stars Harry Kane and Michael Olise has been electric and resulted in a record-breaking season for the Bavarians. Now, Eberl might want to go back to the well.
According to a report from The Athletic (as captured by @iMiaSanMia), Bayern Munich had initially eye a move for RB Leipzig youngster Yan Diomande, but his
cost has exceed Bayern Munich’s threshold. That has put full focus on Newcastle United speedster Anthony Gordon, who the club thinks it can use Harry Kane to lure in.
The plans seems to be in place, but now the Bavarians have to deal with Newcastle United:
Yan Diomande is Bayern’s top target for the left wing, but the likely cost is expected to prove prohibitive, which is why Anthony Gordon has been actively explored as an alternative. The England international has a number of admirers in the Bayern hierarchy, and the German giants believe they can lure Gordon to join Harry Kane in Munich. There has been no club-to-club contact with Newcastle yet. Newcastle will be looking for the second-highest transfer fee they have ever received after Alexander Isak.
The fee will determine everything for Bayern Munich. If it exceeds what the Bavarians want to spend, it will be right back to the drawing board for Eberl.
BFW Analysis
On the surface, the report makes sense. Diomande is younger and you could argue that he might have a higher ceiling than Gordon. However, there is another way to look at it as well — Bayern Munich never — ever — wants to put out the image that it only has one option.
It is conceivable that the Bavarians have Gordon as their top transfer target, but also that they want it to be known they have a list of options and will not be afraid to explore that list if Newcastle United wants to attempt a price gouge.
