The Battle Line Rivalry presented by Shelter Insurance is early this year! Other than the COVID season when this game was played on December 5th, the Mizzou-Arkansas matchup has been featured the weekend after Thanksgiving, and many a Black Friday! But not this year.
The SEC moved Mizzou and Oklahoma to the Thanksgiving window, and moved the Hogs-Tigers up to Halloween. Ah well, still a fall holiday.
The Battle Line rivalry hasn’t gone well for Arkansas since Mizzou joined the SEC. All time the series
between the two schools is 12-4, but an 11-0 win in 1906 and a 7-6 loss in 1944 is hard to count. They also played in 1963, a 7-6 win by the Tigers in Little Rock. Since then it’s been SEC play, with two Bowls sprinkled in. Most will remember the 2008 Cotton Bowl.
The two teams didn’t play in 2013, Mizzou’s first season in the SEC. But then the league determined these two schools were rivals, and they began playing every year. After splitting the first two games, Mizzou has won 9 of the last 10 games. But remember, Arkansas is the better program.
Last season they played in Fayetteville, and they’re back there again this year due to some scheduling weirdness with the addition of Texas and Oklahoma. Mizzou is 4-2 in Fayetteville, losing 34-17 in 2021, and 28-3 in 2015. Last year Arkansas actually led at halftime, 17-14. A poor long snap set up an Arkansas field goal, and a fumble return for a touchdown helped the Hogs out, but the Missouri defense kicked in and held Arkansas scoreless through the second half, winning 31-17.
Here’s to the Tigers best performance on the road this year to date, and an important win.
