With three wins on the trot and a healthy +9 goal differential to start the new year, Gian Piero Gasperini and the Giallorossi are playing as well as any side in Europe. From Donyell Malen’s continued goal-scoring binge to Bryan Cristante’s surprisingly strong start to Paulo Dybala dialing back the clock, Roma is hitting all its marks as it embarks on the 2026-2027 season.
Kicking off the new season against Fiorentina and Lecce was admittedly a pretty cushy way to begin year two under Gasperini, but
Roma disavowed any notion of luck or soft scheduling after their come-from-behind victory over Atalanta. Thanks to late goals from Mario Hermoso and Matías Soulé, Roma slayed La Dea at home for the first time in over four years.
While Roma was able to breathe a sigh of relief after Sunday’s victory, things are about to get a bit tickier for the Giallorossi. Over the six weeks alone, Roma squares off against Fenerbahçe, Como, Real Madrid, Inter Milan, and Napoli. To survive that onslaught, not to mention the season writ large, Roma will need all the help they can get, especially if that help has Champions League experience and can fill multiple positions without batting an eye.
Enter Raphaël Guerreiro.
According to transfer journalist Ekrem Konur, Roma is considering a move for former Bayern Munich man turned free agent Raphaël Guerreiro. The 32-year-old Portuguese veteran spent the past 10 seasons in the Bundesliga, scoring 42 goals and providing 43 assists in 223 Bundesliga appearances for Dortmund and Bayern, along with 11 goals and three assists in 63 appearances for both clubs.
While his name was seldom mentioned alongside his more famous teammates, Guerreiro was a mainstay for Borussia Dortmund, making more than 20 league appearances in six of his seven seasons with the club. His playing time at Bayern Munich slipped a bit, but Guerreiro still managed 95 appearances in all competitions over the past three seasons, playing both wing-back and midfield.
Signing Guerreiro to a one-year free-agent deal wouldn’t generate many headlines, but his experience and versatility could be a boon for Roma once the season really gets underway.
