There’s no way to overemphasize how crucial this 3-game series vs the Phillies is for St. Louis if the Cardinals have any aspirations at post-season play this season. Going into Sunday play, the Cardinals trail the Phillies by 3.5 games for the final NL Wild Card spot with the Padres and Marlins also ahead of St. Louis. The Phillies are 5-5 in their last 10 games going into Sunday and the same can be said for the Cardinals. St. Louis needs to take advantage of Painter’s start Monday as he’s returning from hamstring issues. Winning Monday night’s game before the tougher pitching matchups on Tuesday and Wednesday is essential. Anything less than at least a series victory vs the Phillies will make any Wild Card hopes an even bigger uphill battle.
